LAVA Collective present an homage to the cult of old school hip hop this month, featuring a rare personal appearance from legendary New York photographer Ricky Powell.
His first visit to London since 1987 as photographer on the Beastie Boys infamous Licensed To Ill tour, Powell will present his ‘World Famous Slideshow’ – a journey through his archives of iconic street photography – accompanied by his trademark comic vignettes and witticisms. The man they call ‘The Fourth Beastie Boy’ will reflect on the experiences, escapades, and encounters that defined his time documenting the burgeoning cultural scenes of 1980’s New York and beyond, photographing the likes of Run DMC and KRS ONE to Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The evening will commence with a viewing of Tom Fitzgerald’s ‘Echo Party’ film, a theatrical accompaniment to the forthcoming LP from visionary producer, turntablist and MC Edan Portnoy, released early next year. His only London performance of 2009, the night will culminate in alive DJ set from Edan himself. Sampling a multitude of tracks from Traffic Entertainment Group’s vast back catalogue of old school rap, Edan’s new record, ‘Echo Party’, is the result of two years endeavour from the hip hop innovator. Taking place at The Gramaphone in east London on Thursday, December 10, this event is an absolute must for all avid fans of old school hip hop culture. LAVA Collective presents: Echo Party |
